Xi’an is a major hub for the China-Europe Railway Express, which is a flagship project of the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Launched in 2013, the China-Europe freight train in Xi’an has ranked first nationwide in key aspects such as the number of trains, freight volume and loaded-container ratio for many years.
Among the runs during the January-October period, 3,917 were destined for Europe and 1,146 were bound for Central Asia. The cumulative cargo volume reached 5.564 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 12.9 percent, while the number of 20-foot equivalent units shipped stood at 505,000, a year-on-year rise of 10.5 percent.
In 2025, there has been an average of 16 train runs in and out of Xi’an each day, an employee of the China Railway Xi’an Group Co told the Global Times on Monday.
By painstakingly streamlining operating procedures and improving handling efficiency, the Xi’an International Port Station has set daily load records eight times this year, sending and receiving a record total of 28 train runs on March 29, the person said.
The port’s operation has also received impetus from overseas infrastructure buildup, the Xinhua News Agency reported.
Projects such as the Kazakhstan-Xi’an port have been completed and put into operation, facilitating trade and transportation with Europe and Asia and accelerating the city’s transformation into a modern international trade and logistics hub.
The 2nd China-Europe Railway Express Cooperation Forum is set to open on Tuesday in Xi’an, according to Xinhua.
Themed «Connecting Asia and Europe for a Shared Future,» the forum aims to build broader consensuses on international cooperation through enhanced dialogue and exchanges.
At a regular press conference on June 13, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said that the China-Europe Railway Express is a signature outcome of the BRI.
Routes of the China-Europe Railway Express have been launched in 128 cities in China, reaching 229 cities in 26 European countries and more than 100 cities in 11 Asian countries, Lin said.
With freight trains departing every 30 minutes or less on average, the China-Europe Railway Express operates in an efficient, stable and smooth manner, not only bridging economic and trade exchanges between Asia and Europe, but also injecting forces for growth into BRI participating countries, Lin said.
The first China-Europe Railway Express Cooperation Forum was held in 2023 in Lianyungang, East China’s Jiangsu Province.
