Containers now move by rail from Wuhan, China, to Hamburg, Germany, for onward maritime transhipment to Gothenburg, Sweden.

THE China-Europe Express, which ships containers by rail between China and mainland Europe, launched a new route on September 18. It runs between Wuhan, China, and Hamburg, Germany, with onward maritime transhipment to Gothenburg, Sweden.

The first train departed from Wuhan carrying electric vehicles and automotive components, which are expected to the primary goods carried on this route. Major manufacturers, including Donfeng Motor, are supporting the new venture. The total transit time is around 23 days, half the time taken by sea.

The China-Europe Express currently operates via 55 cross-border routes to reach 117 cities in 40 countries, including the previously underserved Nordic region, including Finland, Norway and Sweden.

EU-China Trade and Investment Relations in Challenging Times
Trade continues to be the least problematic aspect of the EU-China economic relationship. The BRI offers potential trade gains for Europe by improving physical connectivity with countries along the route to China, but it also poses challenges for the EU. While Chinese investment in Europe is growing and has focused strongly on technology, it raises the question of whether the EU should fear losing its technological edge, especially when Chinese state-owned companies might distort competition through foreign acquisitions.
