Bulk and liquid cargo, primarily oil, gas, and coal, accounted for the bulk of transshipment, confirming the continued role of EU ports in facilitating energy and raw material flows.
The port of Rotterdam once again led in cargo volume, handling 397 million tonnes. Antwerp-Bruges ranked second and third with 244 million tonnes and Hamburg with 97 million tonnes, respectively. Among the largest ports, Valencia (+3.6%) and Algeciras (+2.6%) demonstrated the largest growth in cargo turnover in 2024, strengthening their positions on the Mediterranean and Atlantic routes.
At the same time, a number of ports recorded significant declines in volumes. The most significant declines were in Constanta (-14.3%) and Gdansk (-11.0%). Coal, crude oil, and gas accounted for 19% of the cargo handled, coke and petroleum products accounted for 16.5%, ores for 7.4%, and chemical products for 7.2%, reflecting current priorities and changes in European port logistics.
