Sharp increase in passenger and freight transport on Polish railways in April 2026

22.06.2026

In April 2026, Poland’s railway sector recorded significant growth in both passenger and freight transport

According to the Polish Office of Rail Transport, over 38.8 million passengers traveled by train — a 10.1% increase compared to April 2025. In the freight sector, approximately 18.4 million tonnes of cargo were transported, exceeding the previous year’s figure by 6.5%.

Total rail freight turnover reached over 4.9 billion tonne-kilometers, up 9.7%, while operational performance totaled nearly 6.9 million train-kilometers, marking a 9.1% increase. The average transport distance per tonne was 268 km, approximately 8 km longer than the year before.

However, compared to March 2026, the freight sector saw a decline: transport volume fell by nearly 1 million tonnes (-4.9%), freight turnover dropped by 4.4% to around 227.4 million tonne-kilometers, and operational performance fell by more than 6%. Despite this, the average transport distance for the month increased by nearly 1.5 km.
