The new combined transport terminal in the Polish city of Karsznice is attracting the attention of the market. PKP Cargo Terminale (a subsidiary of PKP Cargo) has signed a letter of intent with Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE) and its subsidiary Betrans to help establish the new facility.

Karsznice is a village in central Poland in the county of Zduńska Wola, Lodz province, an area known for its logistics activity. The area is an important hotspot on the New Silk Road, and the new terminal is expected to handle much of these volumes once it is complete. The Polish provincial government of Lodz gave the green light to the construction of a new multimodal terminal in Karsznice beginning of January 2022.

Developing Lodz region

The newly formed consortium, Combined Transport Consortium (KTK), is aimed at developing the transport sector and modern multimodal solutions further, in particular in the Lodz region.

«Thanks to the establishment of the consortium, PGE will participate in the creation of a modern transport system that uses the reloading and storage potential of the terminals belonging to PKP Cargo Terminale. It is also another important element on the map of transformation of the Bełchatów region», said Wojciech Dąbrowski, president of PGE in a press statement.

Kasnice

Kasnice is located at the intersection of two important freight lines (131 and 14), which connect north-south, traverses east-west, and is close to the S8 motorway. PKP Cargo hopes to build one of the largest transshipment terminals of Poland here. The new facility is expected to cover an area of 23 hectares and will be equipped with two railway cranes and nine sidings, an unloading and storage yard, and corresponding infrastructure such as roads and parking.

The target capacity of the depot storage area is 4,500 TEUs, with a capacity of 220,000 TEU per year. The construction funds are about 100 million Polish zlotys (about 22 million euros), of which 4.6 million Polish zlotys is requested from the European Union.
